Sustainable Tourism in SOCCSKSARGEN: An Unforgettable Cultural Adventure

Are you ready to explore hidden treasures and vibrant cultures through responsible and sustainable travel? From May 28 to June 3, 2025, I led 14 enthusiastic YouTube subscribers—affectionately known as Team Baleleng—on an unforgettable journey across the scenic and culturally rich SOCCSKSARGEN region. Our immersive adventure combined breathtaking natural beauty, authentic cultural interactions, and exciting activities, showcasing why sustainable tourism is the future of travel in the Philippines.

Participants traveled from diverse locations across the Philippines, including Baguio City, Pangasinan, Antipolo, Valenzuela City, Laguna, Leyte, Cebu, Dumaguete, and Davao City, eager to explore the region’s natural beauty, vibrant culture, and thrilling adventures.

In partnership with the Department of Tourism Region 12, our immersive itinerary began with a comprehensive historical tour of General Santos City. We explored significant landmarks and learned about the city’s storied past, offering insights into its cultural heritage and modern development. A major highlight was an exposure visit to the bustling Tuna Fish Port Complex, providing firsthand experience of the region’s vital fishing industry and its economic significance.

Our exploration of GenSan continued with a visit to the picturesque Sarangani Highlands, offering panoramic views of the landscape and a peaceful retreat into nature. Adding excitement to our stay in General Santos, we visited the mansion of the globally celebrated Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao. This visit offered inspiring stories and anecdotes from his humble beginnings, achievements, and contributions to the community, highlighting the importance of determination and perseverance.

One of the most anticipated culinary experiences took place at STI GenSan College of Hospitality Management. Culinary expert Chef Ronald Ferman provided an insightful and interactive masterclass on tuna, educating us about the various types and specific culinary uses of each part. The session culminated in an exciting and competitive culinary challenge, where participants were grouped into regional teams tasked with preparing innovative dishes under three distinct categories: the classic Filipino appetizer Kinilaw, a beloved Filipino favorite dish, and an internationally inspired creation, all highlighting tuna as the main ingredient.

Team Cebu, expertly led by Roldan Suntosidad, impressed the judges and emerged victorious in both the classic Filipino favorite and international categories. Team Baguio, captained by John Jefferson Salao, displayed remarkable creativity and skill in crafting the winning Kinilaw. STI GenSan proudly participated as an exhibition team, showcasing their expertly crafted dishes like Ahi Tuna, Kinilaw, and Grilled Tuna Panga, skillfully presented by alumnus Bon Luigi Hernandez and student Bernie Lloyd Naïve.

Our cultural immersion deepened significantly as we journeyed to CCT Malungon, where Team Baleleng enthusiastically embraced the rich traditions of the B’laan tribe. Participants engaged in traditional practices such as fetching crystal-clear spring water, mastering the art of making fire from bamboo, and preparing traditional dishes cooked inside bamboo tubes. Musical jam sessions allowed our group to connect deeply with the tribe, culminating in a traditional dance competition. Team Leyte emerged as the winner, with outstanding performances from members Mar Mosquite and Riza Centino.

Another unforgettable highlight was participating in the vibrant Helobung Festival at Lake Sebu. Team Baleleng immersed fully in the rich T’boli culture, enjoying front-row views of the colorful street dance parade and actively participating in the dynamic group dance presentations. Dressed in exquisite traditional T’boli attire, the team engaged in a memorable photo competition set against the captivating backdrop of Lake Sebu’s enchanting Lotus Garden. The immersion was complemented by educational visits to local museums and interactions with the celebrated Dreamweavers, who craft the intricate T’nalak fabric, recognized as a living cultural treasure. For adventure enthusiasts, the thrilling 7 Falls Zipline provided breathtaking views and exhilarating experiences.

Our sustainable tourism journey continued to Sarangani, where we delved into the intricate Maranao weaving culture, gaining insights into the traditional process of creating the Mindanao Malong. Relaxing on Sarangani’s pristine beaches allowed us to explore and appreciate the region’s untouched natural beauty, highlighting the hidden gems of SOCCSKSARGEN.

This weeklong journey into sustainable tourism was more than sightseeing—it fostered profound appreciation and respect for the diverse cultures, heritage, and natural wonders of the Philippines. Our immersive experiences and adventures showcased the boundless potential for responsible and meaningful tourism, reinforcing the idea that sustainable travel creates deep, lasting connections and unforgettable memories. The journey reaffirmed that the Philippines offers endless opportunities for travelers seeking genuine engagement and sustainable adventures.
